Oprah and other good sources

There are some great DIY sources out there for PR. One of the one’s I like the best is Steve Harrison’s guide. Not only do you get a big fat book of producer names and tips on pitching, the instructional CD’s alone are worth the price. There is a “How to Get on Oprah” book included as well that provides some okay information. If Oprah is your top goal, make sure you’re registered on the websites at www.oprah.com. Check to see if you fit any guest requests on a regular basis. And remember, don’t send samples to the production company blind. They simply get donated. Watch the show and look for the producer’s credits. Call one of them and explain what you want in a clear, concise fashion. NO LONG VOICEMAILS! But I would advise you to listen to Harrison’s CD’s first. That will really help.

Some of the best resources for DIY promotion are freelance writer’s sites. I love Writer’s Market for its great database and its extensive list of magazine editor contacts. Plus it’s really cheap. If you’ve got a big budget then check out Cision Media Source. That is hands-down the best database for media contacts. But that’s probably not necessary if you’re just working your own product or service. Still, if you can afford it (it’s about $3,000) it’s a great tool.

Please don’t hesitate to email me at bonnie@waxmarketing.com if you ever have questions on media resources. I’m always here to help.
